An unexpected friendship between a small squirrel and a big lion has caught everyone’s attention. This story is about Güero the Lion and his tiny squirrel friend.
Güero’s life began in a small, harsh cage at a private zoo in Mexico, far from the wide, open grasslands where lions usually live.
While good zoos help protect animals and save them from extinction, the zoo where Güero lived was not one of them. Güero had bad teeth, a neck injury, and was very sad because of the poor treatment he received.
Luckily, a rescue group from Colorado brought Güero to the United States, where he now lives at the Wild Animal Sanctuary.
Here, he has plenty of space and proper care, helping him slowly recover from his past hardships.
The most interesting part of Güero’s story is his friendship with a 13-striped ground squirrel. Despite being much larger, Güero shares his food with the little squirrel without any trouble.
The sanctuary shared on Facebook: “Turns out Güero and the 13-striped Ground Squirrel are buddies and Güero is purrrrfectly fine with the little guy sharing his food.” They also mentioned that Güero and the squirrel both love whipping cream, often enjoying it together after meals.
Such unusual friendships between big predators and smaller animals are rare but not impossible. For example, at Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary, a bear, a lion, and a tiger formed a close bond after being rescued together.

These heartwarming stories remind us that animals can form unique friendships, but we should never try to force such bonds ourselves. When they happen naturally, they make for beautiful and inspiring tales.
