We are quite excited to be perhaps the only national retailer in the United States to offer Pom Pom Crabs (Ptychognathus barbatus) for sale! IMPORTANT: These crabs are very small (most will be 1 inch or less at time of purchase, but they grow up to 1.5 to 1.75 inches), making them prime candidates for nano or mini tanks. In addition to feeding on food stuff that collects on the patches of hair on each claw, these colorful crabs feed on biofilm, and will also eat high-quality dry foods rich in plant matter. We also occasionally feed them protein-rich treats such as frozen bloodworms and wafers. Their natural habitat in the wild is reportedly throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions in Madagascar, Taiwan, and New Caledonia. Breeding in the home aquarium has not yet been reported. Unlike most crabs, these crabs are fully aquatic and can stay underwater indefinitely. However, we recommend keeping your water line low or keeping a top on your fishtank, as they are occasional escape artists. They do best in tanks with plants (such as purple ludwigia and Marimo Moss Balls) or decor that provides cover and places to hideout, like PVC tubing, a tunnel, or hut. They can be kept with some peaceful species of fish, such as Guppies, Rasboras, Danios, Sword Tails, Hatchet Fish, and Tetras. They can also be kept with snails, like Black Devil Snails, Limpet Snails, and Red Racer Snails. They can typically live with dwarf shrimp, such as Blue Velvet Shrimp, Cardinal Shrimp, and Orange Sakura Shrimp, but may attack a slow or sick shrimp. The rare Freshwater Pom Pom Crab is named for its unique fan like claws, which resemble pompoms or boxing gloves. Its dome shaped shell sometimes feature striking zen designs that look painted on!
They are fully aquatic and don’t need land, so they can’t live in a terrarium and must be kept in an aquarium or vivarium. An aquarium filter is a must (a cannister filter with sponges is ideal).
This crab is a feeder, but their diet can be supplemented with a variety of healthy dry food flakes or pellets, cuttlebone, or wafers or bites.
This crab hides out sometimes to feel safe, so it thrives in tanks with a fixture or two that provides cover, like aquarium plants or décor. They look great against green or purple plants and coral!
