All About Substrate Barrier

What does it do? Separates false bottom and substrate Prevents a clogged false bottom Prevents the wicking of water from the false bottom into the other substrate layers Extends the life of the substrate

Each piece of Josh’s Frogs Substrate Barrier measures approximately 18″ x 24″

Using Substrate Barrier Prep:

Substrate Barrier can be cut or folded to fit the bottom of your terrarium. It should be placed on top of your false bottom before adding your substrate.

Josh’s Frogs recommends using Substrate Barrier in conjunction with False Bottom, ABG Mix, Long Fiber Sphagnum Moss, and Leaf Litter.

Caution:

When using in a vivarium, make sure your Substrate Barrier is snug to the edge of the tank so that substrate does not fall into the false bottom, as this will quickly result in a saturated, sopping wet mess that is unhealthy both for plants and animals. Anerobic bacteria can quickly take hold in these conditions. The only solution is to replace the affected naturalistic vivarium substrates with new ones.

Setting Up a Bioactive Vivarium

The modern living vivarium can seem like a complicated – the most puzzling part being what is traditionally not the focus: the lower strata. A variety of materials are used as substrate in order to provide a climate that promotes both the health of the plants and frogs.

False Bottom works best when used in conjunction with ABG Mix, Substrate Barrier, Sphagnum Moss, and Leaf Litter.

Adding Live Plants

Plants in a vivarium help carry moisture from the lower portions of the tank to the airspace of the vivarium. They also create oxygen and help to break down the waste in the tank. Possibly the most important purpose they serve in the vivarium is to provide hiding places and help bring a natural feel to the tank for the inhabitants.

Adding a Clean up Crew

Microfauna are small insects that clean up waste, dead plant matter, and mold in the vivarium. Common microfauna include Springtails and Dwarf White Isopods.

Adding Pets

After letting plants and microfuana populations establish, the vivarium is ready for Dart Frogs, or other inhabitants that like low ventilation and high humidity. Josh’s Frogs Bioactive Booster is a great way to speed up the cycling process!
